Called back after breast screening? Here's what to expect at our Breast Assessment Clinic

Being invited back after a breast screening appointment can feel worrying, but in most cases, it does not mean cancer has been found.

We have launched a new Breast Assessment Clinic webpage to help patients understand what happens if they are invited for further assessment following routine breast screening.

Women may be invited to attend a Breast Assessment Clinic when additional checks are needed after a mammogram. Around 5 out of every 100 women who attend breast screening are invited for further assessment, and 4 out of 5 of these women will receive a normal result.

The new webpage explains:

  • why you may be invited back after screening
  • what happens before and during your appointment
  • the different tests you may be offered
  • when you can expect your results
  • how to contact the service if you have questions

The page also includes information about the support available from our breast care nurses, who can provide advice and reassurance before your appointment.

We hope this information helps patients feel more informed and prepared should they be invited to attend a Breast Assessment Clinic.
